According to one of the messages published on Twitter account of the hacker group Syrian Electronic Army, the group is responsible for compromising Associated Press (AP) Twitter account.
On Tuesday, April 23, attackers published a fake message stating that there were two explosions in White House, and, as result, the US President Barack Obama got injured. “Breaking: Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured,” – said the post.
As confirmed by White house reps, “the AP twitter account has been hacked. A tweet about an attack at the White House is false. We will advise on acct. status.”
As a result of posting the fake news, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which plunged more than 128 points in seconds after the report. It recovered just as quickly when the report was proved to be false.
The Securities and Exchange Commission declined to comment on the incident, as did the New York Stock Exchange.
